TOPIC: WE ARE HUMBLY ELECTED

Romans 9:15 - “For he says to Moses, 'I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.'”

In these words the Lord in the plainest manner claims the right to give or to withhold His mercy according to His own sovereign will. As the prerogative of life and death is vested in the monarch, so the Judge of all the earth has a right to spare or condemn the guilty, as may seem best in His sight.

Men by their sins have forfeited all claim upon God; they deserve to perish for their sins-and if they all do so, they have no ground for complaint. If the Lord steps in to save any, He may do so if the ends of justice are not thwarted; but if He judges it best to leave the condemned to suffer the righteous sentence, none may call Him to account.

When we are brought to see our own utter ruin, and the justice of the divine verdict against sin, we no longer scoff at the truth that the Lord is not bound to save us; we do not murmur if He chooses to save others, as though He were doing us an injury, but feel that if He deigns to look upon us, it will be His own free act of undeserved goodness, for which we will forever bless His name.

Topic: Full Gaze On Him

Text: Isaiah 29:1-8 (KJV)

Key Verse: “Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow: and it shall be unto me as Ariel“ (Isaiah 29:2).

MESSAGE:

The Lord relates with His people in true holiness and abiding righteousness. Thus, His children must also worship Him in truth and righteousness. The Lord does not compromise His standard: “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).

The passage for today starts with a decree of woe to Ariel, “the city where David dwelt”. Ariel, in this passage, refers to Jerusalem, a city which had become so mighty in power and splendour. But more specifically, Ariel signifies an altar of sacrifice. In the course of exaltation by the Lord, Jerusalem had become the consecrated city where the altar of sacrifice to the Lord was and where many came to worship. However, Jerusalem became backslidden and all its eventual outward show of religiosity became abominable to the Lord.

Ariel is a representation of the gradual and eventual backsliding of a once fervent child of God. We are clearly warned: “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15). The Lord will, however, be faithful to as many who honour Him and be an enemy against their enemies.

A true child of God dwells in the secret place of the Most High and abides in His secure and blessed sanctuary. He does not serve or worship God selectively. On the contrary, he is on fire for God all the time. Believers must always wait on the Lord and dwell in His presence at all times. A loss of the vision for the Lord can spell grave repercussions. Therefore, let your hearts be fixed on God and allow nothing to derail your princely pursuit of God.

THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. —Ephesians 6:17

Have you ever noticed that when you plan to spend some time reading your Bible, all kinds of strange things start happening? You wake up in the morning you can decide to read the newspaper - every section of it - and everything will be fine. There will be no phone calls, no disturbances. You can read from beginning to end without distraction. But as soon as you pick your Bible to read, the phone starts ringing. The children start screaming. You remember that you forgot to charge your phone or return a phone call. They are not necessarily evil things that are keeping you from God's Word—they are just things. They are distractions. The devil doesn't want you to read your Bible. Did you know that? He wants to distract you, because the Bible is a crucial weapon for spiritual battle.

The Bible refers to God's Word as "the sword of the Spirit." It is the only piece of offensive weaponry listed with the armour of God in Ephesians 6. The breastplate and helmet are for protection. The shoes help a soldier gain ground. The shield is something to stand behind. But the sword is for attacking and inflicting damage.

So it is crucial you sharpen your sword. You must study it and know the weight of it. You must learn how it works and how it moves. And most importantly, you want to practise and master how to use it.

What shape is your sword in? Is it polished from daily use? Has it been sharpened on the anvil of experience as you have applied and obeyed its truth in your life? Or, is your sword dulled from disobedience? Is it rusty from lack of preparation?

Prayer: Ask the Holy Spirit to help you sharpen your spiritual sword and do battle with the word of your testimony.

Scriptural Reading: Ephesians 6:10-20

10   Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

11     Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12     For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 

13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14     Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

15     and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16     above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

17     And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

18     praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints — 

19     and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel,

20     for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
